Expressive Arts

Creative Pathways into the Language of the Psyche

The psyche does not speak only through words. It also expresses itself through image, movement, sound, gesture, and symbol. The expressive arts offer ways for these inner experiences to take form and become part of the analytic dialogue.

Creative arts therapies include art therapy, music therapy, dance and movement therapy, drama therapy, and poetry therapy. While each discipline developed its own professional field, the arts naturally interweave with one another and with verbal psychotherapy. Expressive Arts Therapy later emerged as an integrative approach that invites exploration across these different creative modalities. In 1994, I helped establish the International Expressive Arts Therapy Association and we had our first international conference in San Francisco, CA.

The integration of Jungian psychology and the expressive arts is a natural one. Jung recognized that the psyche communicates through images and symbols, and he encouraged creative engagement with these expressions through drawing, painting, movement, writing, and other forms of active imagination. Through creative expression, unconscious material can emerge in ways that are immediate, embodied, and meaningful.

In depth psychotherapy, the arts can provide a natural bridge between inner experience and conscious awareness. Images, gestures, and creative expression allow the symbolic life of the psyche to become visible and lived.

How We Use the Expressive Arts in Therapy

During our sessions, you may choose to work with drawing materials, writing, or movement to explore what is emerging in the moment. At times, inner experience can be difficult to articulate in words alone, and creative expression can open another pathway into understanding.

You might sit quietly while drawing or writing, explore a gesture or movement that arises spontaneously, or engage with images and symbols that emerge from dreams, feelings, or bodily sensations. These forms of expression allow the psyche to reveal itself in ways that are often surprising, meaningful, and deeply personal.

You are also welcome to bring material that has arisen between sessions—an image you created, music that moved you, something from your journal, photographs, or other forms of expression connected to your lived experience. In this way, the dialogue with the psyche can continue both within and beyond the therapy room.

Sandplay Therapy

Sandplay therapy is a therapeutic practice that allows the psyche to express itself through image and symbol. Using a tray of sand and a collection of small figures, you can create scenes that give form to inner experience—often expressing thoughts, emotions, and symbolic meanings that may be difficult to put into words.

The images that emerge in the sand can reflect inner conflicts, strengths, memories, and movements toward healing. In this way, the sandtray becomes a protected container where the unconscious can reveal itself through symbolic form within the therapeutic space. Over time, the images created in the sand often begin to shift—reflecting inner change, new possibilities, and a deepening relationship to the self.

A Living Creative Process

Our work together is a living process that allows exploration to move naturally through different channels of expression. There is no single way that the psyche—or the soul—reveals itself.

What matters most is discovering the forms of expression that allow your inner life to emerge and unfold. Through creative engagement, new images, meanings, and possibilities may begin to take shape—revealing aspects of the self that are waiting to come into being.
